The ship was badly damaged and sank within seconds killing hundreds of sailors, including 4 Sullivan family brothers.

About 100 survivors including a 5th Sullivan brother floated in the ocean water for a week suffering from their wounds, hyperthermia and shark attacks.

Because of a communications error, the Navy didn’t mount a search and rescue effort for more than a week.

All except 10 of the survivors floating in the ocean died including the 5th Sullivan brother.

Their parents Thomas and Alleta Sullivan are the only 5 Gold Star parents.

The Sullivans were not the only brother sailors on board the ship. At least seven sets of brothers also served on the USS Juneau.
