Volusia County Sheriff’s Deputy Shot in Shootout Caught on Camera

DELTONA, Florida —

A Volusia County Sheriff’s deputy was grazed by a bullet when a high-speed chase came to an end Thursday afternoon.

It all started when a carjacking was reported on Ludlow Street in the Deltona area where deputies said Phillip Marsh stole a woman’s pickup truck at gunpoint.

Volusia County Sheriff’s deputies caught up with the white pickup and a high-speed chase ensued.

Authorities deployed stop sticks to slow the pickup on State Road 44 and by the time the truck came to a stop near Interstate 4 at least two tires were flat.

The suspected carjacker, identified as Marsh, 30, of Lake Helen, jumped out of the truck and exchanged gunfire with deputies before fleeing into a wooded area along S.R. 44.

A group of deputies eventually surrounded the man. Sheriff Mike Chitwood said Sgt. Tommy Dane and four other deputies exchanged gunfire with him. Dane was grazed and the carjacking suspect was shot multiple times.

Dane’s wound was to the head and he is expected to be OK. He was released from the hospital Thursday night.

Marsh was shot multiple times. He was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

On Tuesday, the suspect’s mother reported the Lake Helen man missing and suicidal. In a call to her, he talked of suicide by cop, and in a text, he told her to ‘watch the news.’

Chitwood said Dane was extremely lucky.

“A millimeter lower and Sgt. Tommy Dane is dead,” Chitwood said about the injury Dane suffered.

The investigation is ongoing and State Road 44 was blocked at I-4.
