Lawmakers in Hawaii Want to ban Cigarettes

Lawmakers in Hawaii want to ban cigarettes in the state but there’s one exception they have in mind. People over 100-years-old could bypass the ban. The current legal smoking age in Hawaii is 21. New age limits would only apply to cigarettes, and not e-cigarettes, cigars, or chewing tobacco.

Tourists would also still be able to bring cigarettes into the state. A bill was introduced in Hawaii’s State House Monday, hoping to put the ban in place by 2024. It would raise the minimum smoking age each year until it reaches 100-years-old.

The staggered rollout will give lawmakers time to work out how to make up for revenue loss from fewer cigarette sales. The Hawaii Tribune-Herald reports the State’s House Health Committee will hold a hearing this week.
