Two East Bay men were arrested on suspicion of theft Tuesday after police said a GPS device led them to a stolen dump truck in Petaluma.
The truck was attached to a trailer hauling a tractor, all taken Monday night from an East Bay construction site. Petaluma police said they got a call from an East Bay resident reporting the theft after the locator device placed the equipment in the North Bay town.
Officers found the missing equipment, and two men with it.
They arrested Patrick Fagundes, 42, of Hayward and Erik Johnson, 46, of Oakland on suspicion of multiple felony counts of vehicle theft, committing thefts with prior burglary convictions and possessing burglary tools. On Wednesday, they remained in Sonoma County Jail on $10,000 bail.
Theft of construction equipment and tools is common. While sometimes recovered, equipment can’t always be returned because owners are unable to specifically identify it, police officials said. They recommend owners use GPS devices and surveillance video, as well as personal identifying marks, photographs and recording serial numbers.
