Five men were arrested early Monday morning in Berkeley on suspicion of sexual offenses involving five girls, police said today. Police were called at about 1:30 a.m. Monday to an apartment in the 1800 block of Shattuck Avenue where the alleged offenses took place.
Police Lt. Angela Hawk said the five men were hanging out in the apartment with five female teenagers when one of the men allegedly took out a pistol and took away the cellphones of at least some of the girls. Hawk said alcohol was allegedly involved in the gathering. One man allegedly lives in the apartment. Hawk said the girls were allegedly told they could not leave, but at some point, at least one girl was told to leave.
The girl or girls that left the apartment flagged down a pedestrian and that’s when police were notified. The five men were identified as 20-year-old Berkeley man Chad Williams, 23-year-old Mather man Drevon Clemon, 25-year-old Oakland man Marquis Joyce, 20-year-old Oakland man Jakari Williams-Compton and 19-year-old Berkeley man Maureece Simpkins.
