Modesto Police Officer Injured When Struck by Alleged DUI Driver

A Modesto police officer was injured early Tuesday morning in a pursuit when his patrol vehicle was hit by a DUI driver who was initially going the wrong way on Highway 99, officials said.

A Toyota Tundra was going north on Highway 99 about 1 .m. in the southbound lanes of traffic, just north of Carpenter Road and eventually exited the highway at Beckwith Road, continuing eastbound, the California Highway Patrol reported.

Officers followed the Toyota, as the driver, later identified as Nazario Castillo, 25, of Modesto, tried to evade them, the CHP said. He got back on Highway 99 before exiting on Tuolumne Boulevard.

Police dispatch notified other Modesto officers working the airport area about the suspect vehicle, according to the Modesto police department.

A Modesto police officer headed toward the area, going west on Yosemite Avenue.

Castillo was going north on Santa Ana Avenue, with officers following behind when he ran a stop sign at Yosemite Boulevard and broadsided the officer, police said.

The officer was taken to a hospital in serious condition. Castillo was also taken to a hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries, officers said.

Castillo was arrested on several charges, including evading a peace officer causing injury or death, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and evading a peace officer while driving recklessly, according to the CHP.

No additional details have been released.
