A Mexican Marine and seven gunmen allegedly part of Mexico’s Gulf Cartel died this week in a fierce gun battle near the Texas border.
The shootout took place in the rural community of El Moquetito, about 30 minutes away from Matamoros. The area and nearby highways have a long history of being under the control of organized crime.
The shootout took place on the 267-kilometer marker of the highway that connects Ciudad Victoria with Matamoros. It was in that spot that the convoy of Mexican Marines fought off Gulf Cartel gunmen.
The highway was temporarily closed by military forces for members of Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office to document the scene.
Federal authorities have not released the number of weapons and vehicles seized.
