Josue Perez Arrested in Connection to Fatal Shooting in Newark, California

Officers arrested a 28-year-old Oakland man in connection with the fatal shooting of a man in the parking lot of a Newark grocery store over the weekend, police said today.

On Sunday, a day after the shooting, officers located and arrested Josue Perez, 28, in Oakland on suspicion of murder, committing a murder during the commission of a robbery and using a firearm during the commission of a felony, according to Newark police Lt. Chomnan Loth. Police are still looking for two additional suspects in connection with the Saturday homicide. “We’re not sure too what the motive is and we’re still looking at all aspects,” Loth said.

On Saturday, just after 12:30 p.m., officers responded to the Grocery Outlet at 36601 Newark Blvd. to investigate reports of a man who was suffering from a gunshot wound, according to police. There, officers found a man, later identified as 29-year-old Roque Leonel Valencia of Union City, in his vehicle suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives began investigating the shooting as a homicide, believing Valencia had been targeted, police said. Perez is being held at the Santa Rita Jail in Dublin without bail. He is scheduled to appear in court next on Monday morning at the Hayward Hall of Justice, according to jail records.
