Nice, France Terror Attack Toll at Least 84 Dead, 50 Injured

NICE, France (KRON) — 84 people are dead and 50 are injured after a truck ran through a crowd during Bastille Day celebrations in Nice, France, CNN reports.

A truck drove onto the sidewalk and plowed through a crowd of revelers who’d gathered to watch the fireworks in the French resort city of Nice in what officials and eyewitnesses described as a deliberate attack. There appeared to be many casualties.

There were “bodies everywhere” after a truck hit the crowd in Nice, the Associated Press reports. The truck driver reportedly shot into the crowd before driving into people.

French president François Hollande earlier confirmed 80 people were killed in Nice, including children, and 18 were gravely wounded. Hollande extended the state of emergency by 3 months.

The driver in the truck attack has been killed by police, French officials told CNN. According to information given by Dominique Rizet of BFM-TV, a CNN affiliate, the truck driver who killed at least 84 people in Nice was known by the French police for violence and weapon use but had no apparent link to terrorism.

He was 30 years old, BFM said. He reportedly had rented the truck, which served in the attack.

The president of the Provence Alpes Côte d’Azur region, which includes Nice, said the truck was loaded with arms and grenades, although police have not confirmed that. Christian Estrosi also told BFM TV that “the driver fired on the crowd, according to the police who killed him.”

The truck drove onto a sidewalk for more than a mile, plowing through Bastille Day revelers who’d gathered to watch fireworks

Sylvie Toffin, a press officer with the local prefecture, said the truck “hit several people on a long trip” down the sidewalk near Nice’s Palais de la Méditerranee, a building which fronts the beach.

An eyewitness has told The Associated Press that he saw a truck driver slam a vehicle into a crowd of revelers in the French resort city of Nice and then emerge shooting, killing many.

Wassim Bouhlel, a Nice native who spoke to the AP near Nice’s Promenade du Paillon, said that he saw a truck drive into the crowd and then witnessed the man emerge with a gun and start shooting.

Bouhlel said he witnessed the man emerge with a gun and start shooting, but Toffin said she that, “to my knowledge” there was no gunfire.

“There was carnage on the road,” Bouhlel said. “Bodies everywhere.”

She confirmed the incident was deliberate.

“It’s an attack,” she said. She said she did not have casualty figures.
