A Carmel man will spend five years in state prison for an attack on woman he was renting a room from, prosecutors announced Friday. Marc Cross, 64, was renting a room in Carmel from Karen Ford on Jan. 24, 2014, when a neighbor heard cries for help from Ford, according to prosecutors.

The cries for help were followed by three sounds of an ax hitting wood, prosecutors said. The neighbor call 911 and deputies arrived to find Ford with a cracked cranium, according to prosecutors. Cross was in bed acting as if he was asleep, prosecutors said. He was intoxicated, according to prosecutors.

Deputies arrested and questioned him and he could not remember what he did, prosecutors said. Ford has had two surgeries and needs more medical treatment for what is a permanent debilitating condition, according to prosecutors.
