Oakland Police in Shootout, Suspect Dead and Officer Injured

One person is dead and an Oakland Police officer is in the hospital after an early Monday morning shoot-out near MacArthur BART station.

According to Oakland Police officials, the shooting happened at around 1:32am Monday morning after officers responded to a call on Martin Luther King Jr. Way just blocks away from the MacArthur BART station.

Investigators say the two officers encountered a suspect armed with a rifle, who opened fire on them, wounding one of the officers.

The officers returned fire injuring the suspect.

OPD spokesperson Johnna Watson said the officer and suspect were rushed to the hospital, where the suspect was pronounced dead.

As of 4:30am, the officer is listed in stable condition.

Residents in the area told KTVU that they heard anywhere from 20-40 gunshots and saw numerous police vehicles rushing to the scene.

Fire officials also responded to the scene as officers blocked off a large area near the shooting scene.
