Albuquerque police are looking for a man who is wanted on suspicion of raping and beating a 75-year-old woman.
Officer Simon Drobik said Ernest Casias, 55, didn’t show up a police substation where he had arranged to turn himself in on aggravated criminal sexual penetration, attempted murder, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and tampering with evidence charges on Saturday evening, and police are calling him a fugitive.
“Anyone harboring him will be (charged) with a felony,” Drobik said.
Casias is accused of violently raping the woman in her home on the 5900 block of McKinney NE in early March. Drobik said that Casias beat the woman with a hammer, breaking her neck and nose and knocking her dentures out of her mouth. Officers found her on March 7, the day after she was attacked, and police said she was covered in blood along with her bedroom, hallways and bathrooms, according to the complaint.
“These are the types of calls where officers cringe, and detectives never forget crimes like these,” Drobik said.
Police said Casias was a handyman and did odd jobs for the victim. They also were considering opening a recycling business together and police found that the woman had given Casias more than $25,000 in the last year, according to the complaint.
Police said they recently obtained DNA evidence that linked Casias to the crime scene. He has denied the charges. A warrant for his arrest was issued Friday.
Drobik said the woman is still recovering at a local hospital. She was able to identify Casias as her attacker by picking his picture out of an array of photos, according to the complaint.
