By Bay City News Service Sheriff’s officials in San Mateo County said they arrested a man Saturday on suspicion of shooting at a car along Highway 1 near Pescadero. According to sheriff’s officials, Daniel Floyd Vezina, a 57-year-old transient, was arrested after deputies received a report of a man with a rifle firing shots into a vehicle near Tunitas Creek, at approximately 6:50 p.m.
Deputies encountered two victims, brothers aged 16 and 19 years old, who said Vezinas tailgated their car and was weaving in and out of the lane. When the two brothers pulled over to secure a loose item in the bed of their pickup truck, they saw the suspect’s car stop behind them, with the suspect firing a rifle in their direction, according to sheriff’s officials. Deputies said the suspect fired an unknown number of shots at the car, but neither victim was struck. The victims then sped away and called 911.
Deputies said other witnesses reported seeing Vezina brandish the firearm at them also. Deputies located the suspect’s vehicle on Highway 1 south of Martin’s Beach and performed a traffic stop, at which time Vezinas was detained, according to sheriff’s officials. Deputies recovered a rifle and a handgun inside Vezina’s vehicle, along with approximately 1500 rounds of ammunition.
Both guns were loaded with a round inside the chambers, according to deputies. Vezinas was arrested and booked him into the Maguire Correctional Facility on suspicion of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon, among other offenses, and is currently being held without bail according to sheriff’s officials. The motive for the shooting remains under investigation.
