An ex-felon who was arrested in Las Vegas last week has been charged with murdering another man in East Oakland in May, authorities said today.

Demara Hatch, 35, is accused of fatally shooting 30-year-old Jay Hansen outside his apartment in the 2800 block of Nicol Avenue on May 25.

U.S. Marshals Service officers arrested Hatch at his job in Las Vegas on Aug. 27, agency spokesman Joe Palmer said.

Oakland police Officer Eric Milina said in a probable cause statement that witnesses told police that Hatch got into a dispute with Hansen and shot him to death.

In addition to murder, Hatch is charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Prosecutors say he has three prior felony convictions: battery with serious bodily injury, second-degree burglary and possession of a controlled substance.
