A 31-year-old man today pleaded no contest in Salinas to felony charges in the attempted rape of a spa employee who fled the crime scene naked before citizens notified police, according to the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office. Jose Mauricio Dominguez, of Seaside, will be sentenced to eight years in prison when he returns to Superior Court on May 7 before Judge Pamela Butler, Deputy District Attorney Jeannine Pacioni said. On Jan. 12, Dominguez tried and failed to break into the Cypress Studio massage parlor on Casanova Avenue in Monterey, then forced his way into the nearby Sundance Spa on Kolb Avenue where he attempted to rape a woman resting in a room, according to prosecutors.
The female victim used a ruse to delay Dominguez from completing the rape and she ran out of the business without clothes until some people came to her aid and called Monterey police, Pacioni said. Dominguez then fled to a neighboring pool supply business, where he stole some items. Monterey police investigated and eventually arrested Dominguez. He will be sentenced based on his no contest plea to attempted rape, first degree burglary, second degree burglary and attempted second degree burglary, prosecutors said. The first degree and attempted rape charges each qualify as strikes under California’s three strikes law, Pacioni said.
