An ex-felon pleaded not guilty today to a charge that he murdered a man in East Oakland in November 2008.

Curtis Smith, 34, is accused of fatally shooting 30-year-old Marlan Campbell in the 9300 block of International Boulevard on Nov. 21, 2008, an incident that wasn’t solved until recently.

In addition to murder, Smith is accused of being an ex-felon in possession of a firearm, as prosecutors allege that Smith has two prior convictions for possession for sale of cocaine base, one in 1999 and one in 2006.

The prior convictions could increase Smith’s state prison sentence if he’s found guilty of murdering Campbell.

Smith is scheduled to return to Alameda County Superior Court on April 7 for his preliminary hearing, which will determine if there’s enough evidence to order him to stand trial.
