The Santa Clara County medical examiner’s office has identified a homeless woman who was stabbed to death outside a San Jose Walgreens store in August as 70-year-old Joan Anne Hughes. Hughes, who was known by the name “Gail,” was fatally stabbed the evening of Aug. 13, one of the most violent days in the city’s summer crime streak. Hughes was stabbed at the Walgreens at the corner of West San Carlos Street and Meridian Avenue, where she spent much of her time.

Marquis Reynolds, 37, of San Jose, was arrested on suspicion of stabbing Hughes. She remained unidentified for months. In September, investigators said they believed the woman killed, who was well-known in the neighborhood, was originally from New York and appealed to the public for help in determining her true name. On the Monday when Hughes was stabbed, one man was fatally shot around 1:39 p.m. and a second man was shot around 4 p.m. The first man died at the scene, the second died days later from his injuries.
