A Vallejo police officer and a firefighter rescued a man who was trapped in a burning trailer Saturday morning, Vallejo Fire Department spokesman William Tweedy said. Battalion Chief Patrick Dunn was the first to arrive at the burning 24-foot travel trailer on Lincoln Road East at about 11:40 a.m., Tweedy said. Dunn and police Sgt. Kevin Bartlett entered the trailer in full protective gear and found Robert Herwat, 58, unconscious on the floor, Tweedy said. The two men pulled Herwat to safety three minutes before other firefighters arrived, Tweedy said. Herwat was treated at the scene then taken to Sutter Solano Medical Center in Vallejo. He suffered second- and third- degree burns over 45 percent of his body and was listed in critical condition, Tweedy said. Herwat was then transferred to the Bothin Burn Center at St. Francis Memorial Hospital in San Francisco, Tweedy said. Firefighters quickly controlled the blaze, which caused about $4,000 in damage and left the trailer uninhabitable, Tweedy said. The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental. Fire crews remained at the scene for about 90 minutes, Tweedy said.
