On January 29, 2011, at about 8:55AM, Oakland Police Officers responded to the 5500 block of Taft Street to a report of an individual armed with weapons harassing a resident on the block. Responding Officers saw a man later identified as Matthew Cicelski in front of the residence and Cicelski fled on foot. Officers surrounded the block to contain Cicelski. Cicelski forced entry into the home of the individual that called the police armed with what they though was an Assault Rifle. The residents ran out of the house and advised Officers Cicelski was inside armed. Cicelski appeared on the front porch armed with a replica Assault Weapon pointing it at the Officers. The Officers opened fire on Cicelski and he was fatally wounded.

Homicide Investigators were called to the scene to conduct the investigation. The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office also responded and is conducting their own investigation into the shooting. The Oakland Police Department’s Internal Affairs Division is conducting an administrative investigation as well. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Homicide Section at 510- 238-3821.

  • The police almost shot and killed me that day, three officers open fire while I screamed “Don’t shoot the gun is not real.” Now they are trying to rewrite testimony by altering 911 tapes and the District Attorney has refusing to interview any witnesses that do not support the police version of events, even after the investigators became aware that the 911 tapes have been altered they have refused testimony. This cover-up is a shame on our city, a blight on the future of trust between citizens and the Oakland Police.
