The Santa Clara County medical examiner’s office has identified the victim of a shooting late Friday afternoon in San Jose as 18-year-old Hugo Gutierrez. Police found Gutierrez suffering from gunshot wounds near the El Pollo Rico restaurant at 2687 Story Road at about 4:55 p.m. A preliminary investigation indicates that Gutierrez was riding his bicycle on Story Road between Galahad Avenue and East Capitol Expressway when he was approached by at least two individuals, police said. One suspect opened fire on Gutierrez with a semi-automatic handgun, striking him several times, police said. Gutierrez fell to the ground near the restaurant and was transported to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead. Police, who said the shooting was likely gang-related, took one suspect, a 17-year-old boy whose identity is being withheld, into custody. Gutierrez’s death marks San Jose’s seventh homicide of 2011. Two additional homicide victims from incidents that took place in late 2010 died in January, bumping the toll up to nine deaths, San Jose police Officer Jose Garcia said. Both directions of Story Road between Galahad Avenue and East Capitol Expressway were blocked until 1 a.m. while police investigated the shooting, Garcia said.
