Two Salinas men were charged today for their alleged involvement in the murder of a Castroville teenager last month, a Monterey County sheriff’s deputy said. Efren Hernandez Vargas, 18, was fatally shot at the intersection of Seymour and Salinas streets in unincorporated Castroville at around 8 p.m. on Dec. 16, sheriff’s Sgt. Terry Kaiser said. Vargas suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. As a result of an ongoing investigation and with the assistance of witnesses, murder charges were filed today against Edmundo Martin Pulido Jr., 19, and Kevin Alexander Letcher, 22, who also goes by the name Kevin Rogers, Kaiser said. Pulido was arrested in San Diego on Jan. 5 by the San Diego County
Sheriff’s Department in connection to the murder, Kaiser said. Salinas police detained Letcher on unrelated charges on Dec. 31, he said. The investigation is ongoing and additional arrests are expected, Kaiser said. “We want to thank the community for helping,” he said. Two men who were arrested on Dec. 17 in connection with the shooting have since been released and are not being charged, sheriff’s Cmdr. Mike Richards said.
