A man who had been missing for a week is in the hospital after police discovered him in a wooded area by U.S. Highway 101, near where his car had been found days earlier. The 25-year-old man was first reported missing by his family when he failed to show up for a funeral service on Thursday evening. No one had heard from him since May 8 at around 1:00 a.m., police said.

On Monday police learned that the man’s car had been towed on May 8 after being involved in a single-vehicle rollover collision near Highway 101 and Hellyer Avenue. Detectives received a detailed location of where the crash occurred on Tuesday and went to the scene. Officers found the man in a wooded area between the on- and off-ramps of the freeway.

Police said that he had not been visible from the road. Although alive, the man was unresponsive and was taken to Regional Medical Center. San Jose police Officer Jose Garcia said police believe the man had been at the site since his car had crashed and was towed by the California Highway Patrol. Garcia said he could not give more information about the man’s injuries, nor how or why he crawled out of his car into an area that was obscured from site

A 26-year-old man wanted in connection with an attempted murder in Richmond surrendered to a SWAT team this morning after an overnight standoff, a Richmond police lieutenant said. A special investigations unit located attempted murder suspect Todd Gillard, of Richmond, as he was going into an apartment at Gately Avenue and Ells Street around 10 p.m., Lt. Bisa French said.

A SWAT team surrounded the apartment and was in contact with Gillard. They negotiated with him throughout the night until he surrendered around 5 a.m. and was taken into custody, French said. Gillard had a $1.5 million arrest warrant out for him in connection with a February attempted murder, French said. No one was injured in the standoff, she said.

A girls’ basketball coach at Cardinal Newman High School in Santa Rosa pleaded not guilty today in Sonoma County Superior Court to having sex with a 16-year-old student. Andrew John Medeiros, 25, of Santa Rosa, is charged with two sex crimes with a person under age 18. The crimes allegedly occurred April 2. A preliminary hearing date is scheduled for July 10. Medeiros was arrested April 11 at Piner High School, where he was employed as a student supervisor.

He posted bond on $50,000 bail and is out of custody. Medeiros met the 16-year-old girl at Cardinal Newsman High School where he was the girls’ basketball coach last season, Sonoma County sheriff’s Sgt. Carlos Basurto said. The investigation began when the girl’s parents contacted the sheriff’s office after they discovered sexually explicit text messages between Medeiros and the alleged victim, Basurto said. The two charges against Medeiros are sex with a foreign object and oral copulation with a person under 18.

Medeiros also coached for the North Bay Elite Basketball Club. The club was founded in 2000 to provide high school girls’ basketball players with advanced instruction and exposure to higher-level competition, according to its website.

Police arrested three alleged members of a white supremacist gang on Tuesday in connection with an April traffic collision in Santa Rosa, police said. Three search warrants were executed on Tuesday: one at 7 a.m. in the 100 block of Scenic Drive; another at 8:30 a.m. in the 1300 block of Slater Street; and a third at 10 a.m. in the 2400 block of Joseph Court East, Santa Rosa police said.

Two suspects were stopped in a silver Nissan Xterra and a third was stopped in another vehicle, where officers found a loaded firearm, hashish and processed marijuana, police said. The two suspects in the Xterra were identified by police as Michael Warren, Jr., 37, of Santa Rosa, and Renee C. Warren, 45, of Santa Rosa. The third suspect was identified as Joseph C. Beall, 36, of Santa Rosa. The arrests stemmed from a traffic incident that occurred around 8 p.m. on April 20.

In that incident, an Xterra pulled up alongside a red Toyota Tercel that was stopped at a traffic light at the Stony Point Road off-ramp from state Highway 12, according to police. The two occupants of the Tercel recognized the male and female inside the Xterra, who yelled racial slurs and challenged them to fight, even though the victims are Caucasian, police said. Investigators said the victims are past associates of the suspects.

When the two drivers turned south onto Stony Point Road, the Xterra collided with the Tercel, and police believe the collision was intentional. After a brief chase, the driver of the Tercel managed to escape and the victims arrived home. They called police and identified the two suspects, and after investigating, police executed the three search warrants. Police said the three are affiliated with a white supremacist gang.

Michael Warren was arrested on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a firearm, possession of stolen property, marijuana sales, and assault with a deadly weapon, police said.Renne Warren was arrested on a felony warrant for challenging others to fights.Beall was arrested for being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition, possession of stolen property, marijuana sales, and possession of hashish. All three could be charged with gang enhancements, police said.

A 75-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence after driving off the roadway in Sausalito on Tuesday morning, police said. Police responded to a report of a car that had gone off the roadway near the intersection of Cazneau and Platt avenues at 7:09 a.m. The driver, identified as Joseph Huwyler of Sausalito, was slumped over the steering wheel of the idling SUV when officers found him, police said.

Huwyler allegedly became uncooperative and refused to exit the vehicle, and the officers forcibly removed his hands from the steering wheel and took him out of the car, according to police. He showed signs of intoxication and was arrested, but he continued to resist as the officers took him into custody, police said.

He was taken to Marin General Hospital, where he was admitted for treatment of a medical condition unrelated to the accident. Police said Huwyler had previously been arrested for DUI on April 18 following another traffic collision.
