A man suspected of shooting a police officer 19 years ago is still being sought by authorities.
Fernando Ramirez Garcia has been charged with attempted murder.
Officials believe he shot a Santa Ana police officer in the leg during a traffic stop in October 1998. The officer had pulled him over because he had expired registration on his 1970s BMW, officials said.
Garcia fired multiple rounds at the officer before running away, officials said.
The officer was still in his car, with his seatbelt on, when the shots were fired, officials said. The officer was shot in the left thigh. He recovered from the injury and returned to work by the end of the month.
Garcia had been deported in 1997, the year before the shooting, police said. He had also been convicted of drug dealing in January 1990, court records show.
Garcia, 41, was described as 5 feet, 4 inches tall, 144 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes.
Police say Garcia, who also goes by the names Ruben Garibay Zepeda and Gerardo Lopez, was released from prison in 1996 and has a significant police record, mostly related to narcotics offenses. The suspect was formally deported from the United States in 1997.
Caution: Garcia should be considered armed and dangerous.
