A 44-year-old woman with four prior felony convictions in San Mateo County, including one for embezzlement, pleaded no contest Monday to new charges that she embezzled more than $12,000 from a Redwood Shores company, prosecutors said. Yolanda Kwan, of Newark, worked for the technology firm Head in the Cloud as an office manager for 14 months, during which time she had access to a company credit card.
Kwan racked up $12,194 in unauthorized purchases during that time, according to District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe. This was Kwan’s second felony embezzlement case, and she’s also been convicted of theft in other cases. She was in financial distress and raising three children, which may have been a factor in her decisions, according to Wagstaffe.
When she returns to court for sentencing on June 8, Kwan is looking at no more than 16 months in custody or under the supervision of the county probation department. “Normally for a $12,000 embezzlement, one would be looking at a relatively light sentence,” Wagstaffe said. “Probation with some jail time, maybe 90 days,” he said. “It’s her record that has elevated this.” Kwan’s defense attorney Ross Green was not immediately available for comment.
