Suspected DUI Driver Nearly Hits Man Standing in His Own Backyard

A suspected DUI driver narrowly missed running over a San Jose man in his own backyard early this morning, according to the California Highway Patrol. At about 2 a.m., the driver was heading northbound on Interstate Highway 680 in a Honda Accord when he ran into the back of a Dodge Charger that was driving in the far left lane, said CHP spokesman Officer Ross Lee.

The Charger was forced into the center median while the driver of the Accord lost control and veered sharply to his right across all lanes and off the roadway. He crashed through a Caltrans fence and then through the back fence of a home, where he ended up coming to a stop about 5 feet from a man who was standing in his own backyard.

No injuries were reported, but the driver of the Accord was taken to the hospital as a precaution. He was arrested on suspicion of DUI, Lee said.
