An Antioch teenager appeared in court today on murder charges for the fatal shooting of a 21-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy in West Oakland in December 2015. Jovante Maurice Stevens, 19, is scheduled to return to return to Alameda County Superior Court in Oakland on March 28 to enter a plea to charges that he fatally shot Wayne Lee Barfield, 21, and Marlin Hill, 17, both of Oakland, in the 800 block of 32nd Street at 8:55 p.m. on Dec. 21, 2015.
Barfield and Hill were both pronounced dead at the scene. In addition to two counts of murder, Stevens is charged with unlawful firearm activity and with committing the alleged crime while he was free on bail in another case. Witnesses and physical evidence identified Stevens as the person who fatally shot both Barfield and Hill, Oakland police Officer Kris McClain wrote in a probable cause statement.
A judge signed an arrest warrant for Stevens on Jan. 30 and he was arrested in Vallejo on Feb. 16, according to McClain. When police interviewed Stevens, he denied any involvement in the double murder, McClain wrote. Charges were filed against him on Feb. 21. Stevens is being held at Santa Rita Jail in Dublin without bail.
