RISING SUN, Indiana – A woman in southern Indiana shot and killed a man who was engaged in a fight with a conservation officer.
The officer responded to a report of a suspicious person in the 8300 block of State Road 56 west of Rising Sun around 12:30 p.m. Monday. The officer arrived to find 32-year-old Justin Holland of Moores Hill, who was near a vehicle on SR 56.
During the interaction between the men, police say Holland began to resist and became involved in a physical altercation with the officer, who has not yet been identified.
A woman who lives nearby came outside and saw Holland beginning to overtake the officer. She fired one shot from her personal firearm, hitting Holland in the torso.
Witnesses rendered first aid to Holland and called EMS. He was taken to the Dearborn County Hospital, where he died a short time later.
“I want to stress at this point that we don’t know what the cause of death is – whether the gunshot wound was even the cause of death, or whether there was something else at play,” said Indiana State Police Sgt. Stephen Wheeles.
An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday to determine how Holland died.
The officer was treated at the hospital for minor injuries.
The woman who shot Holland has also not been identified, pending an investigation conducted by Indiana State Police. She is not currently facing charges in the incident.
