Police have identified a man shot and killed in Salinas late Saturday night as 26-year-old Daniel Juarez Morales. The shooting was reported at about 11:40 p.m. in a parking lot at 1980 N. Main St. near a Buffalo Wild Wings restaurant. Police received separate calls reporting gunshots and a shooting victim in the parking lot, police said. Arriving officers found Morales, a Salinas resident, suffering from a gunshot wound to the head.
He was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators said that an argument had broken out in the restaurant between two groups exchanging gang signs. Shortly after the altercation, Morales left the restaurant through the parking lot, where the suspects shot him, police said.
Investigators have not determined whether the suspects said anything to Morales before shooting him. Police believe the suspects left in a white Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck last seen fleeing east on East Boronda Road. One of the suspects was reportedly wearing dark clothing. Police said that the homicide was the city’s second of the year. It is being investigated as gang-related.
