A man has been arrested on suspicion of robbery for taking a cellphone from a woman in downtown Berkeley on Tuesday night, police said. The woman was walking near the intersection of Shattuck Avenue and Allston Way at about 9:07 p.m. on Monday with her cellphone in her hand when the suspect approached her on a bicycle and grabbed her phone, police said.
The suspect rode off on his bike westbound on Allston Way but University of California at Berkeley police officers who responded to the area detained him on University Avenue near Milvia Street, according to police.
The man, later identified as 23-year-old Preston Bouie, was formally arrested after the victim identified him as the person who had robbed her, police said. The woman wasn’t physically harmed and her phone was recovered, according to police. Bouie was scheduled to be arraigned at the Wiley Manuel Courthouse in Oakland this afternoon.
Prior to his court hearing he was being held at the Berkeley City Jail in lieu of $150,000 bail.
