One suspect has been taken into custody and one remains at large as San Mateo police continue to search for a possibly armed suspect in an auto burglary. Police began searching for a suspect in the 300 block of South Fremont Street earlier this evening after witnesses reported subjects fleeing from the scene of an auto burglary with one of them appearing to be armed with a handgun.
The suspect is described as a black male in his 20s wearing a white t-shirt and blue jeans. Residents are being asked to shelter in place on East Fifth Avenue, East Second Avenue, the 200, 300 and 400 blocks of South Eldorado Street and the 200 and 300 block of South Fremont Street.
All doors and windows should be closed and locked. San Mateo police and the American Red Cross have set up a shelter this evening for all residents displaced by the search. The shelter is located at 725 Monte Diablo Avenue in San Mateo, police said. Residents are being asked to avoid calling 911 for information and updates.
