Santa Rosa police arrested two men for allegedly stealing a $1,000 “bait bicycle” downtown on Wednesday.

The Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition donated the bike and police officers placed it at several locations downtown Wednesday as undercover detectives watched nearby, Sgt. Brad Conners said.

Connors said two men took the bait around 11:30 a.m. The men cut the bike cable to a fence and left the area with it, Conners said.

Uniformed officers arrested the men as they rode away.

Nick Ruiz, 38, and Elijah Reed, 22, both of Santa Rosa, were arrested on suspicion of felony grand theft and conspiracy, Conners said.

Ruiz also was arrested for a violation of his probation for drug possession and Reed was arrested for violating his probation for restricting or obstructing a police officer, Conners said.
