Hayward police are looking for a man who robbed a gas station and led police on a pursuit on Interstate Highway 880 early Saturday morning, a police lieutenant said Monday. Officers responded to a report of a robbery in progress at a Chevron gas station at 24350 Hesperian Blvd. near Southland Mall around 12:30 a.m., acting Lt. Jeff Snell said.
Officers were told that the suspect vehicle was described as a gray vehicle, possibly a Kia, Snell said. An officer in the area saw a Hyundai Elantra leaving the mall and speeding to southbound Highway 880, according to Snell. The officer attempted to stop the vehicle but the suspect did not yield and crashed into bushes at the Tennyson Road off-ramp, he said. The suspect, who matched the description of the person who committed the robbery, got out of the vehicle and fled, Snell said. Police set up a perimeter to search for the suspect without success, according to Snell.
The suspect is described as a black man standing about 5 feet 11 inches with a medium build, the lieutenant said. He was wearing a green jacket and black mask at the time of the robbery, police said.
The man took money and cigarettes from the gas station but the cash was recovered in the suspect vehicle, Snell said. No injuries were reported. It appears the man was the sole occupant of the car, according to Snell.
The California Highway Patrol closed all northbound and southbound lanes of Highway 880 at Tennyson Road around 1 a.m. Friday as police searched for the suspect. Northbound lanes reopened about 20 minutes later and southbound lanes were cleared by about 2:15 a.m.
