A man who arrived at a Fremont hospital with a gunshot wound to the leg on Sunday afternoon refused to tell police where or how he had been shot, police said. The 24-year-old man walked into Washington Hospital at 2000 Mowry Ave. near the Fremont BART station at about 3:15 p.m., according to police. He told investigators he had been shot outside the Smart and Final grocery store at 3171 Walnut Ave., but officers responding there found no evidence of a crime scene, according to police.

Later, he changed his statement, and police determined he had been shot outside of Fremont but could not determine where. The man remained uncooperative with investigators and was released from the hospital. Police contacted surrounding agencies but none of them were looking for a shooting victim. Police said that video surveillance showed the man was dropped off by a female driving a green two-door 1990s Honda Accord with a spoiler on the trunk.
