A burglary suspect shot and killed by police as he allegedly fled from officers in Menlo Park on Tuesday afternoon was identified today as a 52-year-old resident of Riverside County. The San Mateo County coroner’s office said Jerry Matheny, a resident of Nuevo, was the man killed by Menlo Park police officers as he allegedly fled with a gun on Willow Place.

Police officers had responded there after receiving reports just after 12:30 p.m. Tuesday of a suspicious person on Willow Place, a cul-de-sac off of Willow Road between Middlefield Road and Waverly Street. When police arrived, they allegedly found Matheny burglarizing a building. Office buildings along that street house venture capital and startup firms.

Police said Matheny tried to run and one officer used a Taser stun gun to try and stop him. He then allegedly pulled out a gun, prompting police to shoot him. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators did not say whether Matheny aimed or fired at the officer. One police officer was injured during the pursuit and taken to a hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening. Police have not elaborated on his injuries.
