Fremont police detectives are seeking the public’s help in locating a man suspected of committing an armed robbery in Fremont earlier this month, police said. Deandre McLeod, 20, of Hayward, is suspected of snatching an elderly woman’s gold chain in the area of Maybird Circle and Platinum Terrace in the Ardenwood neighborhood on Oct. 5 around 5:30 p.m., according to Fremont police.

McLeod reportedly stripped the necklace from the woman’s neck and was chased by her husband before producing a handgun and firing a total of three shots. McLeod was picked up in a car by an accomplice who was waiting for him nearby, police said. Descriptions of the accomplice’s vehicle were given to police by witnesses, leading to the arrest of Dantay Freeman, 20, of Antioch on Oct. 15.

Detectives continued their search for McLeod on Oct. 16, when the Fremont police SWAT team made contact with him in Newark at an E-Z 8 Motel shortly before 8 p.m. McLeod evaded officers by jumping a fence and running across all lanes of traffic on Interstate Highway 880, prompting major freeway closures for around an hour.

McLeod was eventually picked up by an unknown female accomplice at a Starbucks located on Mowry Avenue near Farwell Drive after crossing highway 880, police said. A search of McLeod’s hotel room revealed two loaded firearms, according to police. McLeod is considered to be armed and dangerous and he may be staying in Oakland or Hayward. Police advise not to approach McLeod if he is spotted, but instead to call police immediately.
