A DeKalb County detective was shot by an inmate during a transport. (continued below video)
The shooting happened while the officer was transporting robbery suspects back to jail from court. Deputy Chief Operating Officer Dr. Cedric Alexander said the men just had a felony first appearance for robbery. Around 8:30 p.m., Alexander said one of the inmates, Miguel Benton attacked Detective Phillip Cristy, who was one of the two detectives on the steps of the courthouse. Benton got detective Cristy’s gun and shot him twice. Benton was shot and killed by Detective Cristy’s partner.
Detective Phillip Cristy is listed in stable condition after undergoing surgery at Grady Memorial Hospital according to DeKalb County Interim Police Chief J. Conroy.
