Santa Rosa police arrested a suspected gang member for an unprovoked attack on a pedestrian late Sunday night, a police sergeant said.

Police went to the area of Santa Rosa and Colgan avenues around 11 p.m. after someone called to report a fight, Sgt. Lisa Banayat said.

The caller said someone was yelling gang-related statements and death threats, and the male suspect yelled “I’ll shoot you!” when the caller told the suspect to settle down, Banayat said.

Police found a 40-year-old Santa Rosa man at the intersection who said the suspect ran up to him and began assaulting him, she said. The suspect was armed with a knife, threatened to kill the man and made gang-related statements, according to Banayat.

The victim fought with the suspect and pinned him to the ground. The suspect dropped the knife and spat at the victim, Banayat said. The victim, who didn’t know the suspect, then fled, the sergeant said.

Another officer located the suspect, identified as Jesus Farias-Hopper, 18, of Santa Rosa, on Colgan Avenue. Farias-Hopper pulled away from the officer who tried to detain him as two females got out of a nearby truck and walked toward the officer, according to Banayat said.

One of the women said she was Farias-Hopper’s girlfriend, and the women started to leave as other officers arrived, the sergeant said.

Farias-Hopper continued pulling away from the officer and spiting at him until he was handcuffed, Banayat said. He was taken to a hospital where he was treated for his injuries and was booked in the Sonoma County Jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon with gang enhancements, resisting arrest and assault on an officer.
