Police are investigating an assault with a deadly weapon that occurred prior to a DUI and drug possession arrest early this morning in Watsonville. At about 12:30 a.m., officers were dispatched to the Villager bar at 1032 East Lake Ave. due to a report of a group of males fighting outside the establishment, Watsonville police Sgt. Henry Robles said.
Responding officers found a 51-year-old man unconscious on the ground with severe head injuries. Medical personnel transported him to a local hospital, according to Robles. Witnesses pointed the officers to a vehicle leaving the East Lake Shopping Center parking lot carrying three males who were supposedly involved in the fight, Robles said.
After stopping the vehicle, police identified the driver as Antonio Rodriguez and the two passengers as Raymond Angulo and Israel Garcia, all from Watsonville.
Police arrested Rodriguez for driving under the influence, possession of cocaine, fighting in a public place, and assault with a deadly weapon, according to Robles.
Angulo and Garcia were also arrested and each charged with fighting in a public place and assault with a deadly weapon. All three suspects were booked into the Santa Cruz County Jail. The victim’s condition has not yet been disclosed.
