Monterey County sheriff’s deputies on Tuesday arrested a homeless man on suspicion of knocking a man unconscious next to a business outside of Salinas, deputies said.
Deputies were dispatched at 5:11 p.m. Tuesday to a reported battery at a business at 597. N. El Camino Real in an unincorporated area just west of U.S. Highway 101 and north of Salinas, according to the sheriff’s office.
When deputies arrived, they found a man lying unconscious and an employee of the business reported witnessing the suspect, Ricardo Recino, punching the man in the face, sheriff’s officials said.
The man was knocked unconscious and then hit his head on the ground, the witness told deputies.
The suspect hid behind the business and deputies set up a perimeter around the property, sheriff’s officials said.
Deputies were at first unable to locate Recino but soon found and arrested him after making several announcements over a public address system.
Recino, 48, was booked into Monterey County Jail on suspicion of battery causing a serious injury and obstructing a peace officer, according to the sheriff’s office.
The victim was transported to a hospital in San Jose for treatment of his injuries, sheriff’s officials said.
