A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder for allegedly attacking another man at an apartment in downtown Berkeley early this morning, police said.

Police said the victim in the incident, which occurred in the 2000 block of Durant Avenue, between Milvia Street and Shattuck Avenue, at about 12:49 a.m. today, suffered life-threatening injuries and is in critical condition at a local hospital.

They said it doesn’t appear that the incident was a random attack.

Police said they responded to the apartment after a caller reported hearing a disturbance in which a man was yelling and making threats.

Officers who arrived at the apartment heard a loud disturbance coming from the apartment and arrested the suspect at the scene, police said.

They then discovered a crime scene and found the victim, who was severely injured, according to police.

The suspect has been booked into the Berkeley City Jail but Berkeley police said they aren’t releasing the names of either the suspect or the victim at this time.
