A man was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of a robbery that happened earlier this month, Palo Alto police said. Melroy Travenia, 52, was arrested in the 1700 block of Bay Road in East Palo Alto after police connected him to a robbery that occurred on Aug. 6 and obtained a warrant for his arrest, police said. Palo Alto police received a report of a robbery at 11:39 p.m. on Aug. 6 in the 400 block of Waverly Street, where the suspect lured his victim into buying a cup of coffee with him before robbing him and fleeing.
An image of the suspect was captured from a surveillance camera outside of the convenience store where the robbery occurred, police said. On Aug. 8, an off-duty Palo Alto police detective spotted Travenia, who matched the robbery suspect’s description, and notified on-duty officers, who then detained Travenia and later arrested him after discovering he was in violation of parole, police said.
Over the next two weeks, detectives investigated the case while Travenia was released from custody. Detectives presented their case to the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office, which filed a single felony charge of robbery against Travenia.
After obtaining a warrant for Travenia’s arrest, police located him and booked him into the Santa Clara County Main Jail. Anyone with information about the case or suspect is asked to call the Police Department’s 24-hour dispatch line at (650) 329-2413.
