An Oakland man was arrested after he allegedly stole a car, fled from officers and was found with a loaded, stolen gun early Monday morning, police said.
Officers responded to a report of an auto theft in the 1100 block of Victoria Avenue around 1 a.m., police said.
Arriving officers searched the area for the stolen 1996 Nissan Altima that was found in the 500 block of Superior Avenue, according to police.
The suspect, identified as 37-year-old Juan Amezquita, was the only person inside the Nissan and fled to a neighborhood, police said.
More officers were called to the area and with the assistance of a police K-9 unit, Amezquita was found hiding in a rear yard utility shed in the 1100 block of Dutton Avenue, according to police.
Ameezquita then fled through the shed’s sidewall as officers were about to arrest him. He was quickly apprehended by the police K-9 unit, police said.
In the shed officers found a loaded high-caliber, semi-automatic handgun stolen week ago from Klamath Falls, Oregon, police said.
Amezquita was arrested on charges including auto theft, possession of a loaded, stolen firearm and possession of narcotics. He was also found to be on probation for attempted auto theft, police said.
He is scheduled to be arraigned in Alameda County Superior Court this afternoon.
