A knife-wielding intruder threatened staff at an Islamic youth centre in an apparent botched robbery on Sunday.
Amateur footage of the incident, which happened in Melbourne’s outer north, was uploaded onto social media websites on Sunday.
The footage shows two men wearing hoodies entering the Hume Islamic Youth Centre in Coolaroo. One of the men appears to be armed with a machete or other large knife.
The pair speak to a staff member for a few seconds before the weapon is swung at the man.
Islaminaustralia.com reported that HIYC restaurant owner Isam Hamad was struck with a machete after refusing to hand over money.
HIYC is a not-for-profit youth service with a cafe, gym, bookshop and religious services.
A police spokeswoman said authorities attended the Motto Drive business just after 12.30am on Sunday following reports of an attempted armed robbery.
She said the staff member had received minor injuries after being confronted with “an edged weapon”.
“Both offenders then ran from the business and left in a vehicle,” she said.
Police are investigating.
