San Leandro Police arrested two burglary suspects near the 400 block of Castro Street after a three-hour search on Monday, a police spokesperson said.

The two suspects were trespassing in the Sandpiper Complex gated community located between East 14th Street and Washington Avenue when a citizen notified police around 1:35 p.m, police spokesman Richard DeCosta said.

The citizen told police that the suspects were carrying a bag and jumping over a fence into a residential backyard. The citizen also provided physical descriptions of the suspects, DeCosta said.

Four minutes after the call, police located the suspects a quarter mile northwest of the Sandpiper Complex. The suspects fled into the backyard of a home on Clarke Street and discarded their bag, which was filled with suspected stolen property, according to DeCosta.

Police set up a perimeter around Clarke Street, Harlan Street, San Leandro Boulevard and Castro Street and used search helicopters and two canine units to conduct a three-hour search for the suspects, DeCosta said.

The suspects were found hiding on a property in the 400 block of Castro Street. After a struggle with officers, the suspects were arrested.

The suspects’ identities and pending charges have not yet been confirmed, according to DeCosta.
