According to American law enforcement, an estimated 52,000 unaccompanied children from across Mexico and Central America are being arrested by the US Border Patrol along the US/Mexican border, primarily in Texas and Arizona.
Government spokespersons estimate that more than 90,000 children will be arrested this year.
President Obama has called the problem a “humanitarian crisis”.
Thousands of the children are being held in crowded detention centers, including makeshift warehouses.
