A 24-year-old man was wounded Monday at an apartment complex in Salinas when a male suspect started firing shots at him after making a reference to a criminal street gang, a police commander said.

Police were called at 8:30 p.m. Monday to the scene of a shooting in the 100 block of Orchard Avenue about a block north of North Sanborn Road, police Cmdr. Stan Cooper said.

The victim had been standing outside the apartment complex when the suspect drove up in a late-model red Honda car and made a reference to a gang to the victim, according to Cooper.

The victim replied that he was not in a gang. The suspect at first drove away but returned a short time later, exited the car and began firing a gun, police said.

The man was struck twice by bullets. Stray shots also hit a nearby apartment and laundry room.

The man was taken to a hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening, Cooper said.

The assailant, still sought by police, was described as a heavy-set male wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and checkered shorts.
