A 19-year-old convicted felon was arrested Tuesday in Salinas after he attempted to flee from police officers who found two firearms near where he was apprehended, a police commander said. At 8:34 a.m. Tuesday, Salinas police stopped a vehicle in the area of Sherwood Drive and Cherry Street in connection with a traffic violation when a man got out of the passenger side of the car and ran, police Cmdr. Sheldon Bryan said. Police said they observed the man holding his waistband as he fled, as if he were holding a firearm, Bryan said.

Officers pursued the suspect and caught up with him on California Street at East Rossi Street. They arrested the suspect, Elijah Hernandez, and then located two firearms nearby that he had discarded, Bryan said. Hernandez was booked into Monterey County Jail on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a firearm, gang enhancements and violating his probation, police said. Hernandez was also identified as being involved in a recent riot at the county jail during which a Monterey County sheriff’s deputy was injured, according to Bryan.
