A man who severely beat an acquaintance with a bike lock in San Mateo last year was sentenced to four years in state prison in a Redwood City courtroom Thursday.

Santos Manuel Marquez-Montiagudo, 37, met up with the victim and his friend at a San Mateo taqueria on July 20, according to San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe.

At the taqueria, Marquez-Montiagudo learned that the victim was bisexual, Wagstaffe said. When the men left the taqueria, Marquez-Montiagudo told the victim not to walk with him so people wouldn’t think he was gay, Wagstaffe said.

The victim refused to leave, and Marquez-Montiagudo and the victim began to fight, Wagstaffe said.

Marquez-Montiagudo grabbed the U-lock from his bike and beat the victim with it, fracturing his skull, jaw, orbital and rib, Wagstaffe said.

Marquez-Montiagudo pleaded no contest to charges of felony assault and inflicting great bodily injury in February.

He will be credited with 373 days of time served and will have to pay fines and restitution, including restitution to the victim in an amount to be determined, Wagstaffe said.
