A 34-year-old man was arrested after a vehicle pursuit that started in unincorporated Monterey County near Carmel Valley and ended in the city of Monterey early Sunday morning, sheriff’s officials said today. At 3:01 a.m. Sunday, a sheriff’s deputy tried to pull over a green 1999 Honda Civic on Carmel Valley Road near Pacific Meadow Lane but the Honda’s driver refused to yield, according to the sheriff’s office.
A pursuit ensued involving the sheriff’s deputy and a Carmel police officer who pursued the vehicle through Carmel Valley and the city of Monterey. During the pursuit, authorities learned the Honda was associated with 34-year-old Lawrence Basiden, who was already wanted by Seaside police for previous crimes, including domestic violence and assault with a deadly weapon.
The driver of the car, later identified as Basiden, allegedly disregarded traffic lights and stop signs during the pursuit, sheriff’s officials said. As he reached the end of Van Buren Street in Monterey, Basiden fled from the vehicle on foot but was taken into custody, according to the sheriff’s office.
