A teenage boy was arrested after a woman fought back when he tried to steal her cellphone in downtown Walnut Creek on Wednesday night, police said today.
Police said the woman was walking in the Broadway Plaza shopping area around 9:25 p.m. when the teen suspect approached from behind and tried to grab her phone from her hand.
The woman resisted and the suspect kicked and hit the victim and pulled her to the ground, still trying to get the phone away from her, according to police.
The woman screamed, which alerted other shoppers in the area and scared the suspect off.
He ran from the scene and was spotted by police several minutes later on Newell Avenue across from Broadway Plaza.
Police said officers detained the teen, who the victim and a witness identified as the attempted robbery suspect.
The boy, a Fairfield resident whose name is not being released because he is a minor, was arrested on suspicion of attempted strong-arm robbery and was taken to juvenile hall in Martinez.
The victim suffered a scraped elbow during the attempted robbery but didn’t require medical treatment.
